How to Streamline Your Pathway to Employment and Permanent Residency as a Registered Nurse in Australia

What is the Streamlined Transitional Path?

Australia has long struggled with a critical shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs), especially in aged care and regional areas. For internationally qualified nurses—especially those from Stream B countries like the Philippines, India, and Nepal—the biggest barriers have been the cost and complexity of gaining AHPRA registration, particularly the expensive OSCE exam.

AusPath’s Streamlined Transitional Pathway offers a practical, affordable solution. Through this program, qualified nurses can work in Australia as Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) under sponsorship, earn Australian wages, and transition to full AHPRA RN registration while already living and working in the country—without paying upfront for OSCE training and exam costs.

Important: This pathway is not for Cert III Holders alone. It is specifically for internationally qualified nurses who plan to become Registered Nurses in Australia, and already hold a Bachelor of Nursing and NCLEX-RN approval.

How the Transitional Pathway Works

Step 1: Secure PCA Employment in Australia

  • Stream B nurses are matched with employers via DAMA or CSLA agreements (Designated Area Migration Agreements / Company Specific Labour Agreements)
  • Enter Australia on a TSS 482 or 494 visa as a Personal Care Worker (AIN/PCA)

Step 2: Work and Save

Earn income while living in Australia

  • Gain real-world care experience counted towards AHPRA recency requirements
  • Step 3: Complete Your OSCE Training & AHPRA RegistrationTrain for and sit OSCE while working (no need for expensive tourist visa or unpaid leave)
  • Once passed, transition into full RN role and apply for AHPRA registration

Step 4: Transition to RN Visa (SID / 494 / PR)

Once AHPRA registered, your employer can sponsor you under:

  • Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (with just 1 year experience!)
  • 494 visa (Regional)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme 186 (after 2 years)

And here is a little secret: If you’re Filipino and coming direct from the Philippines to be an OFW, you are required to get the Direct Migrant Workers (DMW) approval and an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC). This is a Philippine law requirement, and under this law the Employer is required to pay for your visa and flights.

What Is ANMAC and Why Does It Matter?

ANMAC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council) assesses the qualifications and work experience of internationally qualified nurses for migration and skills assessment purposes.

  • Have completed a Bachelor’s in Nursing.
  • Be AHPRA-registered or on the OBA pathway.
  • Have 1 year (1,040 hours) of paid RN experience in the last 5 years.
  • Submit references, payslips, and verification letters.

Note: PCA work does not count towards RN experience for ANMAC, but it does help with AHPRA registration.

Superannuation & Additional Benefits

  • 11% employer-paid superannuation (can be refunded if you leave Australia).
  • Medicare (if on 494 visa).
  • Up to $15,000 in relocation subsidies in some states.
  • Free Ausmed CPD access + Leecare software training through AusPath.

Summary: The AusPath Transitional Pathway

  • Register with AusPath and complete AHPRA Self-Check.
  • Pass NCLEX and meet English requirements (IELTS 5 OK for PCA roles).
  • Get sponsored as PCA via DAMA or CSLA (482 or 494 visa).
  • Work in Australia and save money while training for OSCE.
  • Sit OSCE and apply for AHPRA RN registration.
  • Transfer to RN visa (494 or SID).
  • Apply for PR via 191 (after 3 years) or 186 (after 2 years).

This is the most affordable, practical, and low-risk way for Stream B nurses to become Registered Nurses in Australia.
