How to Become a Registered Nurse in Australia: Pathways, Costs, Exams and Visa Options

Updated 21 October 2026. All amounts are in Australian dollars unless another currency is shown.

Working as a nurse in Australia can open the door to a rewarding career, but planning the move involves much more than passing an exam. You need to understand your nursing registration pathway, English requirements, preparation costs, employment opportunities, visa options and relocation arrangements.

At AusPath Agency, we help international candidates organise their pathway, build workforce readiness and connect with Australian employers, approved recruitment partners, training providers and professional services. Our Candidate Portal brings your profile, qualifications, documents, registration progress and employment preparation together in one place.

You can join AusPath free before you finish your exams or obtain Australian registration. Start with your basic information, then build your profile as you progress.

1. Understand the Three Separate Parts of Your Journey

Your Australian nursing journey usually involves three connected processes:

  1. Professional registration: meeting Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
  2. Employment: securing a suitable role with an Australian employer and completing its recruitment requirements.
  3. Migration and work rights: obtaining a suitable visa or confirming that your existing visa permits the proposed work.

A job offer does not replace nursing registration. Passing an examination does not grant a visa. An ANMAC migration skills assessment does not authorise you to practise nursing.

This article focuses on internationally qualified registered nurses. Enrolled nurses and midwives must follow the assessment and registration requirements for their own profession; the NCLEX-RN pathway below should not be assumed to apply to them.

Planning to pay for NCLEX or OSCE review? Explore AusPath Platinum before enrolling so you can check your member vouchers and avoid missing eligible savings.

2. Start with Ahpra’s Self-check and Pathway Information

For nurses entering the standard internationally qualified nurse assessment process, the first step is the free Ahpra Self-check. Enter your qualification, registration and practice details accurately, then follow the instructions issued for your circumstances.

The Self-check is free. The subsequent assessment process can involve fees. Do not confuse these two stages.

Stream A

Stream A generally applies where the qualification is considered substantially equivalent, or based on similar competencies, to an Australian approved qualification. Applicants follow Ahpra’s instructions for assessment, orientation and registration. They generally do not need the Stream B outcomes-based examinations.

Stream B

Stream B generally applies where the qualification is relevant to nursing but is not substantially equivalent to an Australian approved qualification. Applicants proceeding through the registered nurse outcomes-based assessment (OBA) pathway must complete the required assessment stages, including the NCLEX-RN and OSCE.

Stream C

Stream C generally applies where the qualification does not meet the qualification requirements for proceeding through the standard assessment pathway. Further education or an approved qualification may be required. Follow the individual outcome rather than assuming that any short course will make you eligible.

Search NMBA-approved programs of study

Your nationality alone does not determine your stream. Your qualifications, registration and relevant practice history matter.

Streamlined Registration for Eligible Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses

Some internationally qualified registered nurses may qualify for a streamlined registration pathway based on registration and practice in NMBA-approved comparable international jurisdictions. Eligible applicants may not need the standard OBA examinations.

This is a separate eligibility assessment, not an automatic exemption based on holding a particular passport. Nurses trained in one country who subsequently registered and practised elsewhere should check the detailed criteria before paying for review courses or examinations.

Check the NMBA registration standard for internationally qualified registered nurses

3. Complete Assessment, Orientation and Your Portfolio

If instructed to proceed through the IQNM assessment process, pay the applicable assessment fee and complete Orientation Part 1. The published IQNM assessment and orientation fee is $410.

Prepare the portfolio and supporting documents requested by Ahpra. Depending on your circumstances, these can include identity documents, qualifications, academic transcripts, registration verification, employment evidence and other records.

Arrange certified copies, translations and verification directly from issuing organisations where required. Keep your name and personal details consistent across your passport, qualifications, examination bookings and applications.

Follow the sequence and deadlines in your Ahpra dashboard. A training provider cannot override an Ahpra eligibility decision.

4. Meet the English Language Requirements

All applicants must meet the applicable NMBA English language skills registration standard. Some applicants qualify through an accepted education-based pathway; others need an approved English language test.

This requirement is not limited to Stream B applicants.

Check the current rules for accepted tests, component scores, validity periods and combining results. Registration requirements, migration English requirements and points-test English categories are separate: a result suitable for one purpose may not satisfy another.

Read the NMBA English language skills standard

The cost table below uses a $450 planning allowance for one English test. Your actual cost depends on the test, booking country and provider. Preparation courses and repeat attempts are additional.

5. Prepare for the NCLEX-RN with IPASS

For registered nurses directed to complete the OBA, the first examination stage is the NCLEX-RN, the computer-based cognitive examination used for the registered nurse MCQ assessment.

IPASS provides NCLEX online review and mentoring for candidates preparing for Australian and other nursing registration pathways.

IPASS NCLEX Review Fees

IPASS’s published NCLEX review page lists an instalment schedule of:

Payment Published Amount
Initial enrolment PHP 5,000
Start of second month PHP 7,500
Start of third month PHP 7,500
Total review fee under this schedule PHP 20,000

Its October 2026 announcement promotes the 23rd review cycle and enrolment starting at PHP 5,000. That starting payment is not the full review fee. Confirm the current intake, complete package price, inclusions, access period and any promotional conditions with IPASS before enrolling.

The budget below allows $550 for the PHP 20,000 review fee. This is a rounded budgeting allowance, not a live exchange-rate conversion or a guaranteed IPASS AUD price. Replace it with the actual converted amount when you pay.

Platinum saving: eligible members can request the PHP 1,500 IPASS NCLEX review voucher and 10% off eligible IPASS processing service fees. Confirm the applicable service, voucher and offer-combination rules before payment. These benefits do not discount the official NCLEX examination charge.

NCLEX-RN Examination Fees Are Separate

For Australian registration, the published NCLEX fees currently include:

  • USD 200: examination registration.
  • USD 150: international scheduling fee, where applicable.
  • Applicable taxes and bank or currency-conversion charges.

The example budget allows $550 for USD 350 plus a small currency/payment margin. This is an allowance, not a fixed AUD examination fee.

Announced change: from 1 February 2027, the NCLEX registration fee for Australian registration increases to USD 350. With the USD 150 international scheduling fee, that becomes USD 500 before applicable taxes and conversion charges where that scheduling fee applies. Check which fee applies when registering.

Official NCLEX fees

Use the correct nursing regulatory body and examination purpose when registering. If you have already passed the NCLEX-RN, ask Ahpra whether your existing result can be accepted before paying to sit it again.

6. Prepare for the OSCE with AuRNPathway

After meeting the requirements for the next stage, registered nurse OBA candidates proceed to the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

The OSCE assesses practical nursing competence in simulated clinical situations. Preparation should include safe clinical practice, communication, assessment, documentation, prioritisation and familiarity with Australian nursing expectations.

AuRNPathway OSCE Review Fees

AuRNPathway publishes the following preparation prices:

Review Option Published Fee
Individual OSCE preparation $2,999
Group option $2,750, subject to group eligibility and provider terms

The example budget uses the $2,999 individual fee. Confirm the training location, online access, face-to-face practice, mock examinations, equipment, course dates and current package terms before paying.

AuRNPathway OSCE preparation and registration

The review course does not include the Ahpra OSCE examination fee unless your written package explicitly says so.

Platinum saving: request your AUD $200 AuRNPathway OSCE preparation voucher and confirm that your chosen package qualifies before enrolling. On the published $2,999 individual review, an accepted $200 voucher would bring the review cost to $2,799. Do not assume it combines with group pricing or other offers.

OSCE Examination and Travel

The published OSCE examination fee is $4,000 per sitting. The examination is conducted in person in Australia. Follow Ahpra’s current booking instructions and use your confirmed examination venue and date when arranging travel.

Official NMBA OSCE information

Budget for the examination trip separately from your later move to Australia for employment. You may need return flights, accommodation, meals, local transport, travel insurance and an appropriate entry visa. A longer preparation stay or a repeat examination can substantially increase these costs.

A visa used to visit Australia for an examination does not automatically permit employment. Explain your actual travel purpose and obtain advice about the appropriate visa where needed.

7. Apply for Australian Nursing Registration

Passing the required examinations is an important milestone, but you must still complete the registration application and satisfy all applicable NMBA standards, including English language skills, recency of practice, criminal history and professional indemnity insurance arrangements.

The NMBA fee schedule effective 9 October 2026 lists:

  • $346: application for general registration.
  • $201: general registration fee, before any applicable NSW rebate.

These are separate from the IQNM assessment and examination fees. Check the current schedule and any rebate applicable to your principal place of practice before payment.

Official NMBA fee schedule

Complete Orientation Part 2 within the timeframe Ahpra specifies after registration. Maintain your registration and comply with renewal, continuing professional development and other professional requirements.

8. Understand When an ANMAC Skills Assessment Is Required

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) assesses skills for migration purposes. Ahpra/NMBA registration and ANMAC migration assessment serve different purposes.

You should not automatically pay for a Full Skills Assessment after completing the OBA. Nurses who already hold Australian registration may qualify for a Modified Skills Assessment, depending on their circumstances and migration requirements.

Current published fees include:

ANMAC Assessment Published Fee
Modified Skills Assessment $395
Full Skills Assessment $595

ANMAC has announced revised assessment names and fees expected later in 2026. Use the assessment type and price in force when you apply, and confirm eligibility first.

An ANMAC assessment is generally relevant to points-tested skilled migration and may be needed for some employer-sponsored pathways. It is not automatically an additional requirement for every nurse applying for a subclass 482 visa.

9. Example Costs for a Stream B Registered Nurse

The table below is a planning example for one applicant, assuming first-attempt examination passes, IPASS review and AuRNPathway individual OSCE preparation. It is not a fixed-price package or a universal minimum.

Official and provider fees are distinguished from estimated allowances. Travel costs vary considerably with departure city, training duration and accommodation choices.

Registration, Review and Examination Budget — Excluding the Employment Visa and Final Relocation Flight

Item Basis Budget Allowance AUD
Ahpra Self-check Free $0
Join AusPath and create a basic candidate profile Free registration; optional paid products excluded $0
IQNM assessment and Orientation Part 1 Published assessment fee $410
IPASS NCLEX review PHP 20,000 published instalment schedule; rounded AUD allowance $550
NCLEX-RN registration and international scheduling USD 200 + USD 150; rounded AUD allowance before February 2027 increase $550
Criminal history/police checks Estimated allowance; requirements vary by country and purpose $200
English language test Estimated allowance for one test, if required $450
AuRNPathway individual OSCE review Published provider fee $2,999
OSCE trip: return flights, accommodation, meals and local transport Estimated allowance; increase for longer stays $2,500
Entry visa for the OSCE trip, if required Provisional allowance; confirm visa type and exact charge $250
OSCE examination Published fee for one sitting $4,000
Application for general nursing registration Published NMBA application fee $346
General nursing registration Published fee before applicable NSW rebate $201
Documents, certification, translations and courier costs Estimated allowance $250
Estimated Registration and Preparation Subtotal Excludes employment visa and final relocation flight $12,706

ANMAC, if required: add $395 for a Modified Skills Assessment, giving an example subtotal of $13,101. Use the correct alternative assessment and current fee if your circumstances require something different.

Separate Additional Costs: Employment Visa and Flight to Start Work

Some employers may cover the employee’s visa application charge, relocation flight, or both. Others may offer a reimbursement after commencement. Confirm the exact assistance in writing before accepting a role or committing funds.

Additional Item Example Cost AUD
Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482 — standard main applicant application charge $4,015
One-way relocation flight to Australia to commence employment $1,500 estimated allowance
Additional Visa and Relocation-flight Budget $5,515
Combined Example if the Candidate Pays Both $18,221
Combined Example Including a $395 Modified ANMAC Assessment, if Required $18,616

The standard subclass 482 main applicant charge is published as from $4,015. Concessions can apply in limited circumstances. Dependants, payment surcharges and other applicant-specific charges are additional. Other visa subclasses have different fees.

Check the Home Affairs visa pricing estimator

How Employer Assistance Changes Your Example Budget

Employer Assistance Candidate’s Example Amount, Before ANMAC and Other Extras
Employer covers both the employment visa application and relocation flight $12,706
Employer covers the visa application only $14,206
Employer covers the relocation flight only $16,721
Candidate pays both $18,221

These examples concern the employee’s visa application charge and inbound relocation flight. Employer sponsorship, nomination and levy obligations are separate; the employee’s budget should not be used to absorb employer costs that cannot lawfully be passed on.

Reduce Eligible Review Costs with Platinum

The main budget above uses review prices before member discounts. If you qualify for both vouchers, the illustrative effect is:

Item Potential Adjustment
AuRNPathway eligible OSCE review voucher Save $200 AUD
IPASS eligible NCLEX review voucher Save PHP 1,500
Platinum membership after the trial Add $99 AUD
Net Effect of the OSCE Voucher and Membership Alone Save $101 AUD
Further Eligible Savings PHP 1,500 review voucher plus 10% of qualifying IPASS processing fees

Using those assumptions, the $12,706 registration subtotal becomes $12,605 before deducting the converted PHP 1,500 voucher. If you also pay the $4,015 employment visa charge and $1,500 relocation flight allowance, the corresponding example is $18,120 before that PHP voucher saving. Add ANMAC and other extras where applicable.

These calculations assume the $200 voucher applies to the individual review price, you pay the $99 membership fee and both providers accept the relevant benefits. Confirm redemption eligibility, expiry and whether vouchers can be used during the trial. Savings are not cash payments and should only be deducted from services you actually purchase. The 10% processing saving varies with the eligible service fee; it is not 10% off government or examination charges.

Other Expenses to Plan For

The example totals do not include every possible expense. Allow separately for visa medical examinations, biometrics, health or travel insurance, additional police checks, dependants, migration professional fees, optional processing services, repeat exams, repeat English tests, additional review courses, lost income during preparation, or initial settlement expenses such as rental bond and living costs before your first salary.

Do not double-count a check or service if it is already included in a package. Equally, do not assume a review fee includes government charges, examination fees or application processing.

Keep an emergency reserve. If your NCLEX registration falls under the February 2027 increase, revise the USD examination allowance before relying on the total above.

10. Different Australian Visa Options for Nurses

The right visa depends on your age, registration, occupation, experience, English, employer, points, location and personal circumstances. Employer sponsorship is one option; it is not the only route.

Skills in Demand Visa — Subclass 482

The Skills in Demand visa replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa for new applications in December 2024, retaining subclass number 482.

It allows approved employers to sponsor eligible overseas workers. The Core Skills stream generally permits a stay of up to four years, subject to the grant and applicable rules. Nurses must meet the relevant registration, skills, experience, English, health and character requirements and the role must meet the applicable nomination and salary rules.

The primary applicant’s work rights are subject to visa conditions; this should not be described as unrestricted employment. Eligible family members may be included, subject to their own requirements and grant conditions. A later permanent residence pathway may be possible, but requires a separate eligible application.

Official subclass 482 information

Employer Nomination Scheme — Subclass 186

This is a permanent employer-nominated visa. Depending on the stream and circumstances, it may suit an eligible nurse applying through Direct Entry or transitioning from eligible sponsored employment. Age, English, skills, experience and nomination requirements apply, with exemptions in some cases.

A 482 visa does not automatically convert to permanent residency, and employer agreement to a future nomination should never be assumed.

Official subclass 186 information

Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa — Subclass 494

This is a regional employer-sponsored provisional visa. It may suit eligible nurses accepting positions in designated regional Australia. Regional conditions and assessment requirements apply. A subsequent permanent pathway may be available if the relevant requirements are met.

Official subclass 494 information

Skilled Independent Visa — Subclass 189

The points-tested stream is a permanent skilled visa that does not require employer sponsorship. Applicants need an eligible occupation, a suitable skills assessment, an Expression of Interest and an invitation, together with the other relevant criteria.

Meeting the minimum points threshold does not guarantee an invitation. Age, English, qualifications and eligible experience can affect points and eligibility.

Official subclass 189 information

Skilled Nominated Visa — Subclass 190

This permanent skilled visa requires nomination by an Australian state or territory as well as meeting federal requirements. State nomination criteria, occupation availability and commitments differ and can change.

Official subclass 190 information

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa — Subclass 491

This points-tested regional provisional visa involves state or territory nomination, or eligible family sponsorship. It carries regional conditions and may lead to a later permanent visa if the relevant requirements are met.

Official subclass 491 information

Labour Agreements and DAMA Arrangements

Some employers use an approved labour agreement, including a Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA), to sponsor eligible occupations under specified terms. A DAMA is not a standalone visa and candidates cannot assume that every nursing or care role has the same concessions.

Care worker employment, training and nursing registration are also different pathways. Taking a care role does not automatically provide RN registration or a guaranteed RN sponsorship pathway.

For advice on your circumstances, consult an appropriately authorised migration professional, including AusPath’s Trusted Migration Lawyer service where available. Professional Pathway Plans and consultations are separate services; check their current scope and fees before booking.

Explore Platinum and Current Benefits

Use the current voucher issued to you and confirm its application with the provider before paying. The IPASS review voucher is PHP 1,500; any quoted package valuation is not an additional discount.

Upgrading provides preparation tools and eligible benefits. Progress in workforce readiness comes from completing real preparation and providing evidence; payment alone does not establish readiness or guarantee a job, sponsorship, registration or visa.

12. Ask the Right Questions About Relocation Assistance

Relocation benefits depend on the employer, position, location and written offer. Some packages may include visa assistance, flights, temporary accommodation or reimbursement of specified expenses.

Before accepting, clarify what is paid directly, what is reimbursed later, whether dependants are included, when payments become available and whether any lawful repayment conditions apply. Budget for upfront cash requirements even where reimbursement is offered.

Historical relocation promotions should not be treated as current entitlements. There is no universal relocation payment available to every international nurse.

13. Superannuation: an Additional Employment Benefit

Eligible employees receive employer superannuation contributions under Australian law. The super guarantee rate is 12%. When comparing offers, check whether the stated salary is plus superannuation or a total package inclusive of it.

Superannuation is retirement savings. Eligible former temporary residents who leave Australia and meet the visa and other conditions may be able to apply for a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP). Tax, fund fees, insurance deductions and investment performance affect the amount available.

Do not treat the gross employer contributions as a guaranteed cash payout. Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens generally cannot claim DASP under the temporary-resident rules.
