💰 How Much Do OTs Earn in Australia?
Before we dive into the process, let’s talk about the reward:
-
Average OT salary: AUD $90,000 – $105,000 per year (Seek)
-
New graduates: AUD $72,000 – $84,000 per year (GradConnection)
-
Experienced OTs: Can earn over AUD $110,000, especially in rural/remote areas (Seek OT Jobs)

🚀 The New Streamlined Pathways (From 27 October 2025)
Here’s what’s changing:
1. Qualification Assessment Pathway
-
Apply directly to Ahpra (no longer through OTC).
-
If your qualification is considered substantially equivalent → you can apply for general registration immediately.
-
If your qualification is only “relevant” → you will need to complete a Practical Assessment of Competence before registration.
2. Recognised Qualification Pathway
-
The Board will publish a list of recognised international qualifications (with approved graduation dates).
-
If your degree is on that list, you can apply straight for general registration.
3. Comparable Regulator Pathway
-
The Board will publish a list of comparable regulators (international licensing bodies).
-
If your qualification is recognised by one of these regulators, you can apply directly for general registration.
📅 Timeline:
-
September 2025 → The Board will publish full details, including lists of recognised qualifications and regulators.
-
27 October 2025 → The new pathways officially launch.

🛑 What If You Don’t Qualify for the Streamlined Pathway?
Not everyone will be eligible for the streamlined routes. If your qualification isn’t recognised or you fall outside the criteria, you’ll still follow the current OTC process.
Path 1: Current OTC Assessment & Supervised Practice (Before Oct 2025)
-
Stage 1 Desktop Assessment – OTC reviews your overseas degree.
-
If successful, you can apply for limited registration.
-
-
Limited Registration – Find supervised employment in Australia.
-
Supervised Practice – Complete 3–6 months under an approved supervisor.
-
Cultural Responsiveness Training – Mandatory Indigenous awareness training via IAHA.
-
Certificate of Practice Completion (COPC) – Issued once training and supervised practice are done.
-
General Registration – Apply to Ahpra/OTBA.
📅 Timeframe: Around 6–12 months depending on job placement and supervision.

Path 2: After October 2025 (If Not Eligible for Streamlined)
-
If your qualification is “relevant” but not equivalent → you’ll need a Practical Assessment of Competence and possibly supervised practice before applying for general registration.
-
This ensures all OTs meet the same standards as Australian graduates.
📅 Timeframe: Adds several months depending on assessment outcome.
